eXtended Reality Spring School 2022

“Immersive Presence, Augmented Visualization and Advanced Interaction”

May 2-7, 2022 – Naples, Italy

The main aim of the eXtended Reality Spring School 2022 is to propose a privileged moment for stimulating discussions and exchanging scientific experiences and technical results related to eXtended Reality technology.

eXtended Reality (XR) is an emerging umbrella term for all the immersive technologies – Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR) – that aims to extend the user senses by blending the virtual and real worlds and creating a fully immersive experience.

Unlike Virtual Reality technology that completely immerses users inside a synthetic environment where they cannot see the real world around them, Augmented Reality permits the real-time fusion of computer-generated digital contents with the real world and Mixed Reality seamlessly integrates these digital objects into reality and the user is under the impression that the virtual and real objects coexist in the same space.

Many applications of XR technologies have been developed in different fields (medicine, education, arts, cultural heritage, entertainment, military, and industry). Recently, new concepts such as Natural User Interfaces and Mobile Immersion have emerged and permit to combine these technologies with new mobile human-machine interfaces. Consequently, mobile immersion will allow users to move away from purely physical communication mode to a mixed/augmented reality communication, interaction, and collaboration mode. Interactions will be natural and augmentations will become ubiquitous.

The School is open to Ph.D. and Master students, post-doctoral researchers, and academic or industrial researchers; Ph.D. students will receive credits (CFU/ECTS).

The thematic area of XR Spring School 2022 is mainly focused on AR, VR and MR technologies and applications in healthcare and industry.

Minimum number of participants: 25

In order to accommodate a large number of situations, XR Spring School 2022 will be a hybrid event, giving participants the opportunity to attend the event in presence or remotely.

The XR Spring School is a satellite event of the International Conference on eXtended Reality (XR Salento).

Registration

The XR Spring School registration fee includes lectures, daily lunches and coffee breaks as well as the welcome cocktail and the pizza party.

For the attendance in presence, the registration fee is € 380 (including VAT). A registration fee of € 320 is reserved for PhD students of the University of Naples.

For the virtual participation, the regular registration fee is € 300 (including VAT).

The registration fee does not include the accommodation costs.

Discover Naples

Naples is a beautiful Italian city that overlooks the sea, unique in its genre, non-conventional, alternative, and artistic, able to amaze every tourist with its beauty and its unaltered identity through time.

Thanks to its folklore, it is completely different from the other Italian cities: it is sufficient to think that its historic center (together with the pizza) has been considered as the UNESCO World Heritage and is the biggest one of Europe; in it, in fact, there are several monuments belonging to different historical periods, streets and alleys full of history and culture, amazing views, a cheerful and living nightlife, an ancient culinary tradition without equals in the world, a tasty street food, generous and friendly people, and an original and unique theatrical lifestyle.

Its central position also allows reaching the nearest islands as Capri, Ischia, and Procida (in approximately 30-60 mins.), the Amalfitan Coast, Ercolano, and Pompei. From the culinary point of view, it is possible not to eat only the tastiest pizza in the world.

How to get there

From the Hotel Palazzo Esedra: Direct transfer via METRO Line 2.

From the train station Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi):

Route 1: approach the train station ‘Napoli Piazza Garibaldi’ at floor -1 of the Station Building and take METRO Line 2 Gianturco-Pozzuoli due to Pozzuoli. Stop to Napoli Campi Flegrei. Via Claudio is at 10 minutes walking distance through the square in front of the train station on the left side of the Stadium visible in front of the square.

Route 2: Take bus ANM Line 152 in front of the train station and stop at P. Tecchio; the trip lasts about 45 min. Via Claudio is at 10 minutes walking distance through the square in front of the train station, on the left side of the Stadium visible in front of the square.

Route 3: Take bus ANM Line M1N or Line M1NB and stop at P. Tecchio the trip lasts about 45 min. Via Claudio is at 10 minutes walking distance through the square in front of the train station, on the left side of the Stadium visible in front of the square.

From the airport Napoli Capodichino: Take Alibus or Line 3F and stop at Piazza Garibaldi, then refer to one of the 3 routes to move from Piazza Garibaldi to via Claudio 21.

From the highway: Take Tangenziale di Napoli (A56) exit number 10 Fuorigrotta, then turn on the left and go-ahead for 500m keeping the right, you will see a wide parking area aside the University on via Claudio.
