Special Issue: “eXtended Reality for Social Inclusion and Educational Purpose”

Information is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Authors of accepted papers of the conference XR Salento 2022 are invited to submit an extended version of their papers to this Special Issue. All submitted papers will undergo the standard peer-review procedure.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). Conference papers should be cited and noted on the paper. Please note that submitted extended papers should contain at least 50% new content (e.g., in the form of technical extensions, more in-depth evaluations, or additional use cases) and not exceed 30% copy/paste from the original conference paper. All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.

For the extended version of the best papers the publication in Information will be free of charge, while for the other papers there will be a 30% discount.

Special Issue:  “eXtended Reality for Cultural Contexts”

Recent advances in Virtual Extended (XR) technologies provide new opportunities for cultural heritage organizations to attract and engage users more effectively by creating interactive experiences that can foster learning, enjoyment, appreciation, and preservation of cultural contexts while also providing entertainment.

The aim of this special issue is to attract leading researchers to present new methods and innovative approaches related to the design, implementation, and evaluation of XR experiences in cultural contexts. Authors of selected papers presented at the 1st International Conference on eXtended Reality (XR Salento 2022) are invited to submit extended versions to this Special Issue.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). Please note that submitted extended papers should contain at least 40% new content (e.g., in the form of technical extensions, more in-depth evaluations, or additional use cases). All submitted papers will undergo the standard peer-review procedure.

Special Issue: “The Roles of the Collaborative eXtended Reality in the New Social Era”

Journal of Imaging is an international, multi/interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, open access journal of imaging techniques published online monthly by MDPI.

XR aided the development of solutions based on Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Mixed Reality which has transformed how people interact, work and communicate. Today the term XR is closely related to the Metaverse concept. It represents a collaborative and content-authoring platform that involves social media, video games, virtual meeting rooms, meeting places, etc. Furthermore, XR has allowed a paradigm like spatial computing to evolve rapidly. Indeed, through the scanning of real environments using new tools based on photogrammetry, laser scanning, lidar, RGB-D camera, and so on, computers are more and more aware of physical environments and can use this knowledge to blend digital and real worlds and connect users by providing innovative interaction methods.

This Special Issue aims to communicate and disseminate recent tools, methodologies, and pipelines related to the collaborative and/or authoring XR-based platforms. The goal is to show how XR can radically transform social interaction in any context. We specifically welcome papers containing original and mature research on XR applications based on collaboration and content authoring. A particular focus is given to everything concerning XR-based spatial computing technologies and their applicability in the most varied social contexts (e.g. work, entertainment, leisure, education, etc.).
